چکیده

activity both gives rise to and unites physiological and psychological phenomena. The tension between the physiological approach endorsed by AL and the biological ‘constructivism’ of Piaget appears to reflect a deeper epistemological rift. Piaget endeavoured to overcome the deficiencies of empiricist–mechanistic and idealistic–vitalistic accounts to explain the development of intelligence. AL appears to seek to explain this development through an empiricist– mechanistic framework. This issue raises a lot of complex philosophical problems (e.g. mind–body problem) that cannot be easily resolved. AL would nicely complement and be consistent with Piaget if it limited its endeavour to explanation at the physiological level.

Hidden in plain view: degeneracy in complex systems

Degeneracy is a word with two meanings. The popular usage of the word denotes deviance and decay. In scientific discourse, degeneracy refers to the idea that different pathways can lead to the same output. In the biological sciences, the concept of degeneracy has been ignored for a few key reasons. Firstly, the word "degenerate" in popular culture has negative, emotionally powerful associations...

Degeneracy and cognitive anatomy.

Cognitive models indicate that there are multiple ways of completing the same task. This implicit degeneracy cannot be revealed by functional imaging studies of normal subjects if more than one of the sufficient neural systems is activated. Nor can it be detected by neuropsychological studies of patients because their performance might not be impaired when only one degenerate system is damaged....

Measures of degeneracy and redundancy in biological networks.

Degeneracy, the ability of elements that are structurally different to perform the same function, is a prominent property of many biological systems ranging from genes to neural networks to evolution itself. Because structurally different elements may produce different outputs in different contexts, degeneracy should be distinguished from redundancy, which occurs when the same function is perfo...

MUTATION-ABSORPTION MODEL OF THE ENZYME n

Gradual changes in function of proteins in response to single changes in primary structure are often observed to occur and are a necessary condition for evolution by variation and natural selection at the protein level. A probabilistic (entropy theory) analysis of the effect of changes in primary structure on three-dimensional shape and function shows that such gradualism is based on the presen...
